Joey Ramone's signature bleat was the articulation of touchwood sway in America. Sporting a leather jacket and lacerate jeans (like his bandmates) and concealment his cheek behind a geminate of dark specs and a deep shock of dark haircloth, the rangy Ramone helped delineate punk's early persona as well and his two-decade-plus term of office as frontman of the Ramones made him a countercultural image.

Ramone was born Jeffrey Hyman on May 19, 1951 (though he often claimed the year was 1952) in Forest Hills, voice of the Queens section of New York City. Rock & roll gave the teen Joey Ramone an evasion from his parents' split up and he began playing in glam-influenced bands in the early '70s. He co-founded the Ramones in 1974 with friends John Cummings and Douglas Colvin, upon which point all threesome adoptive Ramone as their stage family name. Joey Ramone ab initio served as the group's drummer earlier switch to vocals and having his former bit taken by handler Tommy Erdelyi. The Ramones promptly became regulars at the Bowery club CBGB's and their brief, rapid-fire concert expressive style became the stuff and nonsense of legend. When the Ramones recorded their debut album in 1976, it heralded the true birth of punk stone; although groups care the Stooges, MC5, and New York Dolls laid the groundwork, the Ramones' truancy, three-chord songwriting, cheerfully dense temper, and unbounded vigour created the blueprint that innumerable hoodlum bands would watch over in the decades to come. Their 1976 duty tour of the U.K. helped heat that country's punk setting as well and their impact on American music was never more plain than in the '90s, when a host of punk-pop bands world Health Organization never could have existed without the Ramones' music took that legal to the top of the charts.

Contempt their enormous influence, a life history that spanned iI decades, and a smattering of undisputedly authoritative albums, the Ramones never became stars in their own good -- even though the sound they'd pioneered came to overshadow democratic music during to the highest degree of the '90s and even though the striation recorded during that x with a fresh clean and serious focus. After touring with the 1996 Lollapalooza festival, the Ramones all over that the stardom they'd always coveted was never to be and they disbanded ahead the end of the year. Despite having released the collaborative EP In a Family Way with his brother Mickey Leigh in 1994 (under the cite Sibling Rivalry), Joey Ramone largely shunned the spot following the dissolution. He did make occasional populace appearances and worked for a clock time as a radiocommunication DJ; toward the goal of the decade, he besides began working sporadically on a solo disk. He assembled a ring featuring guitar player Daniel Rey, bassist Andy Shernoff (ex-Dictators), and drummer Frank Funaro (Cracker) and played several gigs in the New York expanse. Sadly, in front the record could be completed, Ramone succumbed to lymphatic genus Cancer on April 15, 2001; he was 49 days old.

New York Times Examines Reaction To Tobacco Regulation Legislation

The New York Times on Sunday examined how smokers ar left in the middle of "this maelstrom of debate" on whether menthol-flavored cigarettes should be included in the legislation that would allow FDA to ban flavored additives (Navarro, New York Times, 8/3).

The House last week by a veto-proof 326-102 vote approved lawmaking (HR 1108) that would give FDA the confidence to determine tobacco products. The metre, introduced by Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), would allow FDA to ban flavored additives, with an exemption for menthol flavoring. Some black anti-smoking advocates criticized the exemption, noting that many black smokers use mentholated cigarettes. The National African American Tobacco Prevention Network withdrew its support for the bill because of the menthol exemption. Seventy-five pct of black smokers economic consumption mentholated tobacco products. Menthol brands account for about 28% of the $70 billion U.S. cigarette market.

It is intellection that menthol and other additives mightiness mask the harshness of tobacco, which could cook it easier for teenagers to begin smoking. Researchers also receive questioned whether menthol plays a character in disproportional rates of cancer related to to smoking among blacks. A recent study from Harvard University found that some butt makers by choice "manipulated menthol levels to attract young people" (Kaiser Health Disparities Report, 7/31).

The Times reports that menthol cigarettes have historically been heavily marketed in black communities and that blacks have disproportionately higher rates of death and disease related to smoking, according to the Times. According to the Times, some smokers "refuse such wholesale interference with personal choices" and others "believe that having their menthol cigarettes snatched away may be just what they motive to oddment their habit."

The Times notes that it "may take more than a ban -- or the health warnings or the $5 pack -- to stop some smokers." Justine Love -- a 54-year-old black Washington, D.C., wireless personality wHO smoked menthol cigarettes for 30 geezerhood and now gives testimonials and public service announcements on her radio station -- said, "This is a very personal decision, and you don't need anybody to tell you what you can or can't do." She adds, "I don't say, 'You should halt smoking.' I give encouragement to quit. I tell them I saved $139 in the get-go month" (New York Times, 8/3).

Since its inception in 1995, the "Critics' Choice Awards" has become a

of information for today's film going public. The very first opinion a
moviegoer hears about new releases at the multiplex or the art house
usually comes from one of its members.

Once again, VH1 will expand elements of both shows online at VH1.com

Fans beg Winehouse to quit drugs after video

Fans beg Winehouse to quit drugs after video

Fans of troubled singer Amy Winehouse have begged her to get help after she was caught on video apparently smoking crack cocaine.
Footage obtained by The Sun appears to show her inhaling fumes from a crack pipe after an apparent 19-minute drugs binge in which she snorted ecstasy, cocaine and admitted to taking Valium tablets.
The disturbing images were said to have been filmed during a party at Winehouse's London home in the early hours of last Friday, just before she attended a court hearing for husband Blake Fielder-Civil. He is awaiting trial on charges of assault and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
Looking dishevelled and wearing a grubby black vest in the video, Winehouse was barely able to talk. When friends ask her to go out with them, she is heard to reply: "I'd be useless to you because I've had about six Valium."
On the singer's website, fans warned the 24-year-old that she would die unless she sought help.
One fan said: "That video of you at home, which is now doing the rounds, will hopefully be instrumental in getting you where you need to be."
The fan quoted the mother of the late Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain, warning Winehouse not to "join that stupid club" of dead rock stars.
